Mary Houck was the only Full Circle Endurance athlete who raced this past weekend, and she did so at the Delta Lake Triathlon in Rome, New York on Saturday, July 15, 2023!
Mary is fresh off her B-Race at IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman and as such, I gave her clear direction on what she was to do at the Delta Lake Triathlon, which was a C-Race for her. I told her that she was not to go too hard or push herself in this race; she was to treat it like it was a brick she was doing on her own in training.
Overreaching (aka going too hard or too fast) at the Delta Lake Triathlon could have negative implications for Mary because it would delay her recovery from IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman. This delayed recovery and improperly imposed load/stimulus/fatigue would then snowball, as it would impact what training we could plan for her A-Race in these next few weeks.
Too much intensity/delayed recovery impacts an athlete’s ability to effectively absorb quality training. It’s really important to consider what is actually important in one’s season, and plan accordingly. If one has an A-Race that they care about more than anything else, everything else in the season needs to be oriented around that “North Star” (the A-Race). In Mary’s case, this meant going easy at Delta Lake.
Mary did just that, had fun racing with her friends, and even finished as second in her age group! Way to go, Mary!
